Coping With Morning Sickness With Young Children in the Home
Coping with morning sickness can already be difficult to deal with, but if you also have other young children in the house, it can become especially difficult. You will need to find some creative ways to help keep them occupied and still be able to get the rest you need.
Not only does morning sickness make you feel poorly, but you’re probably also struggling with a wide range of emotions and fatigue. All of these things can make dealing with your young children a challenge. Accept the fact that these are normal feelings for a pregnant woman and that they will come to pass.
If you feel the need to lay down, pick a spot where your children can be near you. If you are going to lay in your bed, make an area on the floor or on the bed next to you. If you can lay in a recliner in the living room, make sure they have plenty of space on the floor close by. Or, especially for super young children, you can put a mattress on the floor in their bedroom and close the door to make sure they do not wander off if you happen to doze off.
Now, pick some busy tasks for them because you want to try to keep them occupied for longer than 5 minutes at a time. Some great ideas include:
Jigsaw Puzzles – Although it’s great if you can find one with lots of pieces, make sure it’s not too difficult or you’ll only frustrate your child.
Coloring Books – Buy several along with a small pack of crayons.
Play-Doh – Although this can be a bit messy, it may be worth it for you to get some rest.
Cars – A bucket full of cars on the floor can keep them busy for awhile.
Books – If possible, try reading to them. If you just don’t have the energy, let them pretend to read the books to you.
Movies – Buy a few movies that are family friendly and play them while you get some rest.
Although coping with morning sickness is more difficult when you’ve got other little ones, there are a few activities you can try to keep them busy. Remember to keep them close to you so that they are safe, and if it becomes too bad, try to find someone who may be able to take them for you so you can get some sleep.
